La Bohème

A beautiful house with a garden in Cassis, in the south of French Provence

La Bohème is a spacious, fully equipped house in a quiet, gated residence in the picturesque harbour town of Cassis. The house offers comfort, privacy and the authentic atmosphere of the French Riviera. It is perfect for a family holiday, a stay with friends or a longer, peaceful escape from the city. Ideal for those who are not interested in an anonymous hotel, but seek their own space, a garden, room to breathe and the chance to live like a local for a few days. The house consists of two separate units that can be rented individually or together for a larger group of guests. The upper, more spacious part offers three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a separate WC and a large living room with a kitchen that opens onto the main terrace. The lower part of the house holds a studio with its own entrance from the garden, a kitchenette and a bathroom with WC. The main terrace is a pleasant place to sit and is equipped with an outdoor barbecue. In the summer months (May-October), guests can use the residence outdoor pool. The tennis court is available all year round.

Cassis is a picturesque historic fishing harbour on the Mediterranean coast of Provence, close to Marseille and west of the better-known Saint-Tropez. The town is famous for its vineyards, the imposing Cap Canaille cliffs and above all for the beautiful turquoise coves of the Calanques.

One of the most striking landmarks of Cassis is its 13th century medieval castle, which rises on a rocky hill above the harbour and completes the unique atmosphere of the town.

Cassis also offers pebble beaches, a wealth of hiking trails and boat trips into the Calanques National Park, a romantic historic harbour and the famous panoramic Route des Crêtes with breathtaking views of the coast and the Cap Canaille cliff. Local vineyards, traditional markets, restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood and a lively cultural scene all contribute to its unique Provençal atmosphere.

Cycling

Cassis is a great place for an active cycling holiday, especially in Spring, Autumn or the Winter months, when the climate in Provence is milder and there are fewer tourists. The area around Cassis offers road routes as well as trips by e-bike or mountain bike.

Cyclists are drawn to the famous Route des Crêtes between Cassis and La Ciotat, a panoramic road high above the sea with stunning views of the Calanques. The official Cassis tourist website states that every Sunday the Route des Crêtes is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, with access closed to cars or motorbikes.

Climbing

Cassis is a convenient base for climbing in a beautiful part of southern France. The Calanques National Park tempts climbers of all abilities with its white limestone walls overlooking a turquoise sea. The area offers single-pitch sport routes as well as multi-pitch climbing. Spring and Autumn are the preferred seasons. In Summer, access may be restricted due to wildfire risk; always check the most up-to-date regulations.

Wine and gastronomy

Cassis wine was among the very first French AOCs, the Cassis Appellation being officially recognised on 15 May 1936. The whole appellation lies within the town’s boundaries, with vineyards stretching between the town, the hills and the sea. Today, 10 wine estates farm around 215 hectares, and are known above all for their whites, which are fresh and mineral, with citrus and floral notes.

The Provençal market in Cassis takes place every Wednesday and Friday morning. The stalls offer local fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, olives, honey, herbs, local wines and other Provençal regional specialities.

In May the traditional Fête du Vin de Cassis celebrates local winemakers and AOC Cassis wines. The highlight of the gastronomic season is Les Vendanges Étoilées in September, when the town centre turns into a food festival with cooking demonstrations, tastings, local producers and a delicatessen market.
